Shelby Lynne (Ann Arbor, MI)
  The voice of Alabama songstress Shelby Lynne is an addictive thing, whether applied to classic or contemporary country, pop, R&B, or any other style she's favored since coming on the scene in Nashville in the 1980s. But until now she's never channeled a figure really in tune with her own feelings and thinking. That's changed with the release of "Just a Little Lovin'," Shelby's tribute to the great English soul singer Dusty Springfield. The Ark (Ann Arbor] Tickets: $25. Jonatha Brooke (Ann Arbor, MI)
  One half of the duo the Story in the 1990s, Jonatha Brooke takes a major step forward with her new album, "The Works." When Woody Guthrie’s daughter Nora invited Brooke into the Woody Guthrie Archives, the intention was for Brooke to write new music for one or two of Guthrie's songs. Rory Block (Ann Arbor, MI)
  When Aurora "Rory" Block first heard the acoustic blues of the Mississippi Delta as a teenager in 1964, she says, "I felt wild, crazy, in love. My life was suddenly too good to be true." She learned the blues from Skip James and Mississippi John Hurt, and over years of touring venues high and low, with socket-wrench guitar slide in hand, she built a reputation as one of the top acoustic blues guitarists, songwriters, and singers in America. Ralph's World (Ann Arbor, MI)
  Ralph's World is a wondrous musical universe created by Chicago's Ralph Covert. He was (and still is) the leader of a rock band called the Bad Examples, and he was disappointed in the sleepy strumming and syrupy singing that all too often passes for family music. Then one day, while he was at a class called Wiggleworms, inspiration struck. There she found a fertile community of songwriters and performers—Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Bill Morrissey, Cliff Eberhardt, and others—where she fit right in. She's a singer-songwriter with an extraordinary feel for the range of human emotion.   Glen Phillips was the lead singer and main songwriter for the band Toad the Wet Sprocket, which he joined when he was only 14. He's made four solo albums, and he describes his latest, "Mr. Lemons," as "stripped-back and quiet." It includes a very catchy (well, addictive) shuffle-beat version of "I Want a New Drug" along with Phillips originals.
